Berger Recycling Program
Although sustainable construction and recycling seems to be a new trend, for the past 10 years Lavern has built his company around recycling efforts and reducing waste. In 2000, Berger Enterprises was permitted 10 acres of land to use for landfill space. It was projected this space would be completely full by 2006. In 2008, it was estimated that it was only at 40% of capacity – an accomplishment that we are extremely proud of!
By recycling, we can fit an entire house into a 50-yard roll-off.
This has been achieved by the following ways:
1. Salvage and Selling:
Before a building is demolished, our employees assess what can be salvageable and resold to the general public. Things such as cabinets, doors, toilets, entire garages, etc are taken out of each house and brought to our warehouses to be sold. Please visit the “Products Offered” page for a longer list of products. For the past 10 years, we have not advertised for salvage products– we haven’t needed too! Before October 2009, 100% of our customers were from word of mouth – in fact, most of the time we had waiting lists for certain products. With the start of a new demolition contract, we had an increase in salvage material and started running out of places to store them. We started advertising in local newspapers and set specific times when people could come to look at our products. Feel free to call or stop by and inquire about our products.
2. Salvage and Reuse:
Household appliances and cabinets are not the only thing we take out of the buildings we demolish. Many of the buildings we demolish contain copper piping, aluminum siding, and steel beams.
The metals are taken out by both our equipment operators and by hand. Most of the metals are taken to recycling centers by trucks or pickups.
Our carpenters and laborers take down entire steel buildings by hand and forklift to reconstruct, re-sheet, and re-insulate them for our own personal use. Currently we are using these buildings as warehouses for salvage storage, shops, and offices.
3. Crushing and Milling:
All concrete and asphalt is kept separate while demolishing houses. We hire concrete crushers and asphalt millers to crush the concrete and mill the asphalt. This has provided us with more landfill space and material to sell.
